Gavin Smith
Gavin Smith is one of the more popular, if not one of the best, poker players in town.
Smith has been playing poker for over 16 years now. His father taught him cribbage and rummy, but he advanced to poker at age 26 by playing mixed games with his co-workers. In 1996 he became a dealer, and by 1998 he decided to start his own poker club.
Since 2000, Smith has placed in 32, or more, tournaments. Seventeen of his cashes occurred in 2005. He first came to note by winning tournaments in no limit Texas hold 'em and seven card stud in the 1999 and 2000 World Poker Finals at Foxwoods Resort Casino.
In May 2005 he won the first prize of $1,128,278 in the World Poker Tour (WPT) Mirage Poker Showdown in Las Vegas, defeating Ted Forrest in the final heads-up. Again in October 2005 he made the WPT final table in the 2nd Annual Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship and finished 3rd. He made a third WPT final table appearance in January 2006, finishing 4th. The three WPT final tables made him the World Poker Tour Season 4 Player of the Year.
Last year, Smith finished 2nd in the World Series of Poker circuit event at Harrah's New Orleans, winning $293,930. Then in July, he won the World Pro-Am Challenge event at the Poker Dome, taking home the $500,000 first prize.
Nicknamed Birdguts, Gavin Smith was born on Sept. 4 1968 n Ontario, Canada. He currently hosts of The Circuit radio show sponsored by Card Player Magazine and is a member of Team Full Tilt Poker.
