Being a Student of Poker Legend Doyle Brunson

pokermon.jpgI’m pretty sure that it wasn’t World Series of Poker Champion Doyle Brunson who was the first to say it, but Texas Dolly has often used the expression — “Poker… it takes a few minutes to learn, but a lifetime to master.”

Even with 10 WSOP Championship bracelets wrapped around Doyle Brunson’s wrists, he will be the first to admit that if you really want to improve your poker game, then you will have to be a proficient student of the game.

If you want to master the craft, you’ll have to put in the hours sitting in front of the felt, whether you play on-line poker or at the live tables in Las Vegas. In that time, the Poker Padawan can pick up a lot of experience in understanding the betting strategies of playing poker.

While the actual experience of playing poker will be of great value to any budding poker career, it is very helpful to have a little bit of know-how about just how complex poker games like No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em or 7-Card Stud can be. And just like any good student, you have to do a bit of reading. Loads of poker books are available out there for all those interested to cover a plethora of poker topics.

A big plus also is that the wonderful advice found on those pages comes straight from professional poker players who themselves are excellent students and masters of the game.

And the most influential books written about poker that should be in the curriculum of any aspiring poker player are none other than Doyle Brunson’s Super System I and Super System II: A Course in Power Poker. Supersystem I (originally entitled How I Made Over $1,000,000 Playing Poker) was published in 1979, a few years after Doyle Brunson won the main event of the World Series of Poker in 1976 and 1977.

doyle brunsonThe Supersystem I talks about general information on poker, general strategies, statistics, tells and the different facets of different types of poker. Poker experts such as Mike Caro, poker’s greatest researcher, theorist, and instructor; Chip Reese, 3-time WSOP bracelet holder; David Sklansky, poker theorist and author; Bobby Baldwin, 1978 World Poker Champion and president of Bellagio; and lowball expert Joey Hawthorne, also give their valuable opinions on different poker facets.

The Supersystem I is also a good thick book that can be used to store a bankroll of thousands of dollars as shown by Matt Damon’s character in the movie Rounders.

Supersystem 2: A Course in Power Poker came out 20 years after in October 2004. This time, Doyle Brunson’s Supersystem made some refinements with more insights on poker strategies and game theories. If Supersystem I was general, Supersystem 2 gets more specific, and in effect there are more professional poker secrets shared. Every poker enthusiast and expert readily agrees that Supersystem 2 is the most influential book about poker ever written.

Apart from the poker wisdom imparted by all-time poker legend Doyle Brunson, a team of handpicked poker pros (picked by Texas Dolly himself) also contribute to the Supersystem 2. Among them are Daniel Negreanu, winner of multiple WSOP gold bracelets and 2004 Poker Player of the Year; Lyle Berman, three-time WSOP gold bracelet winner, founder of the World Poker Tour, and super-high stakes cash player; Johnny Chan, two-time World Poker Champion and nine-time WSOP gold bracelet winner.

Jennifer Harman, the best female player in the history of poker and one of the ten best overall; Todd Brunson, winner of more than twenty tournaments; Crandell Addington, a no-limit hold-em legend; and Supersystem I contributors Mike Caro and Bobby Baldwin.

You want to be a good student of the game. Read up and take it ALL IN.
