Robert Cheung Victorious at WSOP Event # 38

Robert CheungRobert Cheung, a 46-year-old businessman from Vancouver, BC (Canada) took the the 1,500 No Limit Hold’em tournament (Event # 38) title on Monday beating a field of 2,778 players at the Rio in Las Vegas.

Cheung has only been playing poker seriously for about two years. This was his fourth time to cash at the WSOP, and his third time this year. Cheung also took fourth place in the championship event last year at Harvey Lake Tahoe’s World Series of Poker Circuit.

Greg Hopkins Claims WSOP Pot-Limit Holdem Title

Greg Hopkins wins Event #37, $2,000 Pot-Limit Hold ‘Em of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) on Sunday at the Rio in Las Vegas. Hopkins cashed $269,707, this is his first WSOP gold bracelet.

Hopkins was born in Whittier, CA and spent most of his adult years playing in the cardrooms of Los Angeles. Perhaps more than any other player who has entered hundreds of tournaments over more than a decade, Hopkins won this gold bracelet the old fashioned way – he earned it.

Several events wrapped up over the weekend at teh ongoing World Series of Poker (WSOP) championships at the Rio in Las Vegas. This year, the poker pros seem to be dominating the tables and scooping the prizes. But many young and talented players are out to give them a hard time.

The WSOP Main Event is just around the corner and soon we’ll know who will be this year’s world champion. Here are the winners of WSOP events #31 to #36..

Hoyt ‘Alabama Cowboy’ Corkins Stages Comeback at 2007 WSOP

Hoyt ‘The Alabama Cowboy’ Corkins staged a comeback by taking down the Six Handed $2,500 No Limit Hold’em Event (#30), claiming the gold WSOP bracelet and first-place cash of $515,065. Corkins held the lead at the end of both Day One and Day Two actions, to eventually beat second placer Terrence Chan for the victory.

Corkins adds this bracelet to win his first WSOP win back in 1992. In the fifteen years that have passed until now, Corkins quit the poker circuit for about eight years. Since he has returned to the poker scene, Corkins has won and finished high in a variety of tournaments.

Katja Thater Wins WSOP Razz Event

Katja Thater became the first woman to win an open event at the 2007 WSOP season outlasting seven other top-flight competitors in a grueling 13-hour finale to Event #29, $1,500 Razz.

Thater, a 40-year-old professional poker player, has in recent years has become one of the top poker players in Europe. This was Thater’s first bracelet win at the WSOP. Thater’s victory is also the first for a woman in an open WSOP event in over three years. Annie Duke was the last female winner in 2004.

WSOP Event #28: Hellmuth Fails To Win #12 But Ties Cloutier Mark

Shankar Pillai won the WSOP Event #28, $3,000 No Limit Hold ‘Em, and took home his golden bracelet as well as $527,829 and a Corum watch for his first-place prize. Pillai stared in the final table mid-field but progressively built his stack, becoming a frontrunner 60 hands into the event.

Meanwhile, Phil Hellmuth’s quest for a possible 12th WSOP bracelet ended when he was eliminated in sixth place winning $74,464 cash. But his inclusion in the ‘final nine’ matched T.J. Cloutier’s career mark. Cloutier was introduced to the audience as his record was tied.

WSOP Update: Dave Stucke Takes Event #27, $1,500 NLHE

Dave Stucke entered final table of the WSOP Event #27, $1,500 No Limit Texas Hold’em on Monday and came out with the WSOP bracelet and a first-place cash of $603,069 to the winner.

The heads-up came down to Stuke and the final table’s most accomplished player, Young Cho (who finished third at WPT Gold Strike). Stucke took down the title with a pair of pocket sevens after the board didn’t help Cho’s J-3. Stucke won and Cho earned $382,357 for finishing second.
