WSOP Odds: Amateur or Pro, Who Will Win?

jhachem.jpgThe last three years saw vitually unknown poker players grab the World Series of Poker title, Chris Moneymaker in 2003, Greg Raymer in 2004, and Joe Hachem in 2005. All three won their free WSOP seats from online satellite tournaments.

Will it be any different this year when the 2006 WSOP invades Las Vegas and practically the whole gambling world again?

Of course we will see our favorite poker pros defend their line as they bet, bluff, and maybe win in some WSOP events. Famous faces expected to pop-up for the event include Annie Duke, Jen Harman, Chris Ferguson, Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Gordon, Howard Lederer, Chip Reese, Michael Mizrachi, Mike Matusow, and many more.

There are also the legendary WSOP regulars Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, and Men “The Master” Nguyen playing to keep their record of owning the most number of WSOP bracelets — both Brunson and Nguyen have 10, and Hellmuth has 9.

But the deal here is not whether you’ll collect the most number of bracelets, because there’s nothing sweeter than winning in the $10,000 No Limit Texas Hold’em Main Event and being declared as the WSOP World Champion.

Last year a record 5,619 signed up for the Main Event, most of them amateur players who wanted to replicate what Moneymaker and Raymer achieved before them. Amateurs winning the championship has fueled thousands of “recreational poker players” to go online and try their luck.

This phenomenon also resulted in many online poker sites mushrooming on the Internet and sponsoring tournaments that give away WSOP seats as prizes. In turn the poker community grew larger and larger, mainly populated by people who think they can hit gold playing poker professionally.

And with so many poker resources out there — books, videos, web sites — everybody’s becoming an expert on poker. The real poker professionals who earned their pedestals after decades of playing and strategizing are getting ass-whipped by the new crop of players. Worse, by WSOP first-timers who got really lucky playing online poker.

So if we talk about the odds of whether an amateur or a professional player will win the 2006 WSOP, you will all agree that they’re pretty much the same. Today a newbie has as much chance as Brunson or Hellmuth, or Nguyen to scoop the pot for the WSOP title at the Harrah’s in Vegas on August 10th.

Even oddsmakers can’t come up with real odds regarding this prop. But Bodog dares you to take your chances and bet:Will a professional poker player win the 2006 World Series of Poker $10,000 Main Event?
